I am defecting,
I must pick up what's left of me,
Hatred reflecting,
I'll destroy what I'm called to be
The safe haven in the clouds will inevitably let me down,
So take me in wretched earth, as I sink into the ground
I am defecting,
I must pick up what's left of me,
Hatred reflecting,
I'll destroy what I'm called to be
The hymns of the night, they are calling my name,
Their distorted voices are leading the way,
With no moral compass I am led astray
Serpent's tongue until the deed is done
Feeling the glare of a thousand eyes,
Nothing to lose when trapped by the trees,
Eternal forest, no one will hear the cries,
Of an empty man haunted by his memories
By the moon, do you lay with the snake?
Does he caress your frantic mind?
Ungirth the thoughts aged by time,
By the moon, do you lay with the snake?
(Alone),
I am defecting,
I must pick up what's left of me,
Hatred reflecting,
I'll become what I'm meant to be,
(Alone)

Lyrics by Jesse Benge and Anthony Messina
Wonderful dramatic opening, the voice of a black woman in all her honesty, vulnerability and openess. And then one of the fiercest tracks of Zulu, total hardcore: 'Now they are through with me', full of twists and turns, and suddenly ending in a kind of soul-track, brilliant! This is 21st century music at it's best. The end lecture is dramatic and disturbing, spoken again by a black woman. Makes you think. Hesperus
